Vomiting problem in cats and dogs

 Definition: vomiting is an action including expulsion of content of stomach or intestine These contents can be food with digestive secretion or secretion alone.

Regurgitation: is a passive expulsion of content from esophagus or pharynx.Most often it is occurred short time after feeding.

Vomiting is categorized in two group: acute and chronic vomiting.

 Reason of vomiting: there are so many diseases cause vomiting including : food intolerance,bacterial and viral infection, gastritis, small intestine inflammation, gastroenteritis, gastrointestinal tumor,  foreign body, hair ball in cats, constipation,peritonitis, pancreatitis, liver diseases, kidney disease, poisoning, pyometra, vestibular disease, brain tumor, endocrine diseases like hyperthyroidism in cats, diabetic ketoacidosis, motion sickness especially in puppies

 Diagnosis: on the basis of the examination by your veterinarian diagnostic procedures can be included one or more than one diagnostic tool including: blood test, urine test, radiography, sonography,endoscopy and even exploratory laparotomy and  biopsy.It is necessary to say  even in advanced emergency hospitals sometimes finding the source of vomiting is impossible.

 Treatment: treatment of acute vomiting  includes fasting for 24 hours and then feeding with low fat highly digestible diet.Drinking a small amount of water .If the reason is not obstruction,using anti-vomiting medication  is recommended.In severe vomiting, hospitalization , fluid therapy , using anti-emetic and acid pump control medication are necessary.In chronic form and for those that supportive treatment is not useful, diagnostic procedures should be applied.

 Question:There are so many clients call to their veterinarians to ask if  their pets show vomiting, examination is vital or not?

Answer: If vomiting is repeated or if it is with inappetance  or depression, examination is an obligation.If vomiting is with diarrhea, it is urgent situation and it needs treatment as soon as possible.
